Life List is a series of abstract pastel drawings on Bristol paper. The title Life List refers to the list of species kept by bird watchers. Quoting Storrow:
I keep such a list of birds. I like to be able to track what I have seen and later revisit what I may have forgotten. Similarly, I am fascinated by the the way particular images are insistent in my work. They crop up again and again at different times. They have become my species, my shapes, my images.
In this sensual new work Storrow has extracted the vocabulary of simple images that re-occur in her more complex abstract drawings. By concentrating on the smaller elements she emphasizes their tactile and energetic nature. Storrow uses pastels for their directness and pure brilliant pigment. Areas are defined by a nervous, colored line. Using the smooth surface of Bristol paper allows her to erase and smudge colors, to hide and reveal shapes and to suggest possible tangents. Some images are embedded, seemingly stuck in the paper, others spiral out of it.
The images Storrow depicts have an associative meaning and mood, evoking movement, time, sound and touch. They are a blend of memory and fantasy, yet reference elements in the natural world.
